How the Qur’an Is Divided?
When you first begin learning about the Qur’an you may come across words like Juz Hizb Manzil Makki and Madani. The term many of us are most familiar with is the Juz also known as a Siparah in Urdu.
Juz or Siparah
The Qur’an is divided into 30 Juz (plural: Ajza’) especially helpful when setting a daily reading goal. For example reading one Juz each day allows you to complete the entire Qur’an in 30 days.
This is particularly common during Ramadan when many imams recite approximately one Juz each night during Taraweeh allowing the Qur’an to be completed by the end of the month.
Manzil
The Qur’an is also divided into 7 larger sections known as Manazil (singular: Manzil).
A Manzil is much longer than a Juz. This division is useful for someone who wants to complete the Qur’an in one week. By reading one Manzil each day you can complete the entire Qur’an in seven days.
For most people however reading one Juz a day is more manageable which is why the Juz division is commonly used for daily reading.
Hizb
Each Juz is divided into two Hizbs giving us a total of 60 Hizbs in the Qur’an.
Each Hizb is further divided into four quarters known as Rubʿ.
The Hizb can be a helpful way to break your daily reading into smaller portions. For example during Ramadan you could read one Hizb in the morning and one Hizb in the evening. Together these make one Juz allowing you to complete approximately one Juz each day.
These divisions are simply different ways of organizing the Qur’an. You can choose whichever one makes it easiest for you to maintain a consistent reading routine and stay connected to the Book of Allah.
