夢蝶的幼蟲寄生于其他生物，在生物成長到一定程度後，以生物的死亡為觸發才能長成成蟲。成蟲的品質與死亡時宿主的智能和某種特性成正比。並且每個生物的一生只能被一只（一種）夢蝶寄生，不同的夢蝶擁有不同的品質和特殊能力。而人體是已知的産出夢蝶品質最高的宿主。

需要特殊的方法，才能從死亡的生物體內采集夢蝶。若宿主死亡後，成蟲（即夢蝶）沒有覺醒也沒有被采集，便會控制宿主成為生化人。

在觸發某種極端條件時，夢蝶會有極小的概率在寄主體內覺醒，此時宿主會從死亡重生，吸收夢蝶的能力，並與夢蝶合二為一，進化為更先進的、擁有更高智能和體能、甚至擁有特殊能力的人類。我們稱之為"覺醒者"。與單純食用夢蝶的人類不同，覺醒者的能力不會隨著時間而消退。他們也能夠繼續食用夢蝶而暫時得到雙倍的強化。
