মোটামুটি খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ৩০০০ সালে যন্ত্রের সাহায্যে গণনার যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল। সেই থেকে বিবর্তনের মধ্য দিয়ে নানা ধাপ পেরিয়ে কম্পিউটার ও তার প্রযুক্তি অগ্রগতি অব্যাহত। সূচনা পর্বে কম্পিউটার ছিল শুধু মাত্র একটি গণনা যন্ত্র নাম অ্যাবাকাস (ABACUS)। প্রকৃতপক্ষে এখন আমরা ক্যালকুলেটর বলতে যা বুঝি অ্যাবাকাস ছিল তা-ই। আজ কম্পিউটার বলতে সাধারণ ভাবে যে যন্ত্রটির চেহারা আমাদের চোখের সামনে ভেসে ওঠে তা প্রযুক্তিগত বিবর্তনের দীর্ঘ পথ অতিক্রমের ফসল। এই বিবর্তনে একের পর এক যে সব যন্ত্রের আবির্ভাব ঘটেছে সেগুলি হল (১) অ্যাবাকাস (২) প্যাসকালের যান্ত্রিক গণক (৩) চার্লস ব্যাবেজের ডিফারেন্সিয়াল ইঞ্জিন (৪) বৈদ্যুতিন সংখ্যা গণক বা ইলেকট্রনিক নিউমেরিক ইন্টিগ্রেটর অ্যান্ড ক্যালকুলেটর (ENIAC) (৫) সর্বজনীন স্বয়ংক্রিয় কম্পিউটার বা ইউনির্ভাসাল অটোম্যাটিক কম্পিউটার (UNIVAC)।
