الإمبراطور «فرانسوا جوزيف» الذي حكم النمسا زهاء ٦٨ عامًا حتى وفاته عام ١٩١٦م، وعرفه الناس ملكًا طيبًا مسالمًا، قضى حياته عاشقًا لـ «كاترين شراط» الممثلة الحسناء التي فتنته عن زوجته وابنه وريث عرشه. يروي لنا «نقولا حدَّاد» كيف أوغلت الفاتنة في القصر، وقد أتته أول مرة بائسةً متوسِّلةً، تحمل بين يديها عريضةَ استرحامٍ ترفعها للإمبراطور ليعفو عن أخيها المتَّهَم بإهانته، واستطاعت بعد تلك الحادثة أن تحصل على ما هو أثمن من رحمة جوزيف؛ قلبه وماله. أحداث الرواية تجسِّد فصول ذلك الصراع الذي احتدم بين الإمبراطور وعشيقته من جهةٍ، وبين الإمبراطورة الشرعية ووصيفتها من جهةٍ أخرى، في حكاية تاريخية ذاعَ شقُّها الغراميُّ في البلاط النمساوي، حتى أطلقوا على إمبراطورهم ذاك اسمَ «شراط» تيمُّنًا بعشيقته.

Emperor Francois Joseph who ruled Austria for nearly 68 years until his death in 1916 and people knew him as a good and peaceful king spent his life in love with the beautiful actress Catherine Cherat who fascinated him on his wife and son and heir to his throne. "Nicola Haddad" tells us how the seductress entered the palace. The first time he brought a miserable pleading carrying a petition in her hands that she submitted to the emperor to forgive her brother accused of his insult and after that event she was able to obtain the most precious of Joseph's mercy his heart and his money. The events of the novel embody the chapters of that conflict that raged between the emperor and his mistress on the one hand and between the legal empress and her attendant on the other hand in a historical story that spread her affair in the Austrian court until they called their emperor the name "Shirat" after his mistress.
