لسان العرب هو من أشمل معاجم اللغة العربية وأكبرها، جمع ابن منظور مادته من خمسة مصادر هي

1- تهذيب اللغة لأبي منصور الأزهري
2- المحكم والمحيط الأعظم في اللغة لابن سيده
3- تاج اللغة وصحاح العربية للجوهري
4- حواشي ابن بري على صحاح الجوهري
5- النهاية في غريب الحديث والأثر لعز الدين ابن الأثير.

يحوي هذا المعجم 80 ألف مادة، أي بزيادة 20 ألف مادة على القاموس المحيط. وهو من أغنى المعاجم بالشواهد، وهو جيد الضبط ويعرض الروايات المتعارضة ويرجح الأقوال فيها. ويذكر المعجم ما اشتق من اللفظ من أسماء القبائل والأشخاص والأماكن وغيرها. ويعتبر هذا المعجم موسوعة لغوية وأدبية لغزارة مادته العلمية واستقصائه واستيعابه لجلّ مفردات اللغة العربية. وقد رتبه ابن منظور على الأبواب والفصول فجعل حروف الهجاء أبواباً أولها باب الهمزة وآخرها باب الألف اللينة. وجعل لكل حرف من هذه الأبواب فصولاً بعدد حروف الهجاء، وفي الباب الواحد والفصل يراعي الترتيب الهجائي في الحرف الثاني من الكلمات الواردة في كل باب وفصوله، وقد رتب الكلمات على أواخرها، فما كان آخره اللام تجده في باب اللام.

أراد ابن منظور بكتابه أن يجمع بين صفتين: الاستقصاء والترتيب؛ إذ كانت المعاجم السابقة –كما يقول هو– تعنى بأحد هذين الأمرين دون الآخر، وأخذ على نفسه أن يأخذ ما في مصادره الخمسة بنصه دون خروج عليه، واعتبر هذا جهده الوحيد في الكتاب، وتبرأ من تبعة أية أخطاء محتملة بأن ما قد يقع في الكتاب من خطأ هو من الأصول، وإن تصرف قليلا في النهاية فغير شيئاً من ترتيبها.
